GB0BAB - Burtonwood Air Base
Introduction
As part of International Museums Weekend, Warrington Amateur Radio Club usually sets up
and operates a special event station from the Burtonwood Heritage
Centre at Gulliver's World theme park on part of the former
RAF Burtonwood Air Base, the largest
airfield in Europe during the second world war.
Operation takes place on the HF and VHF bands in several modes with SSB
and CW on HF and FM on VHF. Previous years have also enjoyed success in
SSTV and PSK31. The museum's reference number is 5109 on the International Museums Weekend's
list.
More information about the Heritage Centre and Burtonwood Base can be
found on the Burtonwood Association website.
GB0BAB - Special Event Station 2009
Operated from the Heritage Centre, 27th - 28th June 2009
Good weather prevailed during this year's event which had
3 stations operating simultaneously on different bands and
modes. Although HF conditions were not great, we operated
on a mix of 80m, 40m and 20m, CW, SSB and PSK31.
Owing to the good weather, the VHF station was located
outside on Sunday where the operators took advantage of the
sunshine on offer. They operated FM on 2m and DV (D-Star) on
70cms via the GB7WC repeater.
With safety in mind, the club showed no restraint and splashed
out on an expensive roll of red/white tape to cordon off the
aerials to prevent visitors and other inquisitive individuals
coming to any harm on the mast guy ropes and coax cables.
Our thanks go to the club members who spared their time prior to or
during the weekend to plan, organise and put the station on air and ensure
the event's success. They were Mike G4VSS, Dave G0RVW,
Albert G3ZHE, Jim G3NFB, John M0ANM, Paul G1DVA,
Jeff G1DYN, Keith G8MKO, Dave G7SKR.
At the end of the weekend a total of 192 QSOs had been made on HF.
SSB lead the way with 153 QSOs, mostly on 40m but a few on 80m too.
38 PSK31 QSOs were made exclusively on 20m but did suffer a bit of
breakthrough from the 40m station. A solitary 40m CW QSO was there too
as a token gesture! A number of FM and DV (D-Star) QSOs were also
made.
